Inspiration
Our group member shares a common background of growing up in the developing nation of Vietnam, and we recently came across an article that talks about the devastating consequence of the COVID pandemic on our country's blood supply, which then we asked ourselves what can we do within our power to help fix this issue. Then, after we researched the problem for a while, digging we realized how the problem is not only present in Vietnam, but also in every country that does not have a formal system collecting blood donors. Therefore, we thought about creating a simple android app that can be easily accessed, widely available to anyone of any income level. Article Source: italics link link
What it does
The app will categorize each user as either a blood donor or recipient (organization, business), and in order to sign in, they will have to sign up, and add their blood profile type in order to proceed. After signing in, from the recipient side, they have the option to either look at every possible blood donor recipient or look for those that have a matching blood profile as the organization.
How we built it
We use Java as the backend and XML as the way to make UI/UX design for the app. Moreover, we use Firebase as the way to store the users' data and help them log in with it.
Challenges we ran into
On the coding-end, this is the first time I have ever used Firebase so I need to look up some different codes in firebase to link the firebase to my own apps. In terms of teamwork and how to proceed, we encounter multiple problems due to our online teamwork the time constraints which pushed us to work overtime and compromise on which part where we should stop building on in order to user-test it, and bug-fix it.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The video that was created down to the last-minute, and fixing the UI to optimize the user experience.
What we learned
We learned that firebase is a more complex software system than initially thought and that we can have a better working online experience by choosing a common app to communicate and work on.
What's next for Blood.Inc-HealthcareTrack
If possible, we would want blood.inc to be able to expand to track not only blood but also add more features which will allow users to link with their medical online records which (with consent) could create a unified system for any medical organization to call upon those blood donors.
