Inspiration

There's nothing like attending a live concert by your favorite artist, but having the ability to do so is limited by the concert's location, ticket availability, and cost. We wanted to break down those barriers and allow anyone, anywhere in the world, attend a live show and get as good of an experience, or even better, as being there in person, using virtual reality. Say hello to Vthere!

What it does

Vthere is a platform that allows artists and venues (concert, clubs, outdoor) to offer live access for anyone in the world to any given show by streaming it in VR using any VR video camera. On the other end, fans can purchase tickets to attend those shows live on any device, including any VR headset.

How we built it

We built a custom video player that works in the browser and supports VR output for any VR device, with fallback to a 360 video playing experience for those who don't have a VR device. Separately, we built a VR video steaming pipeline that accepts video from any VR video camera and exposes it as a live stream to the end users in the browser.

Challenges we ran into

VR headsets can only consume content from apps native to their platform. The biggest challenge was to build VR video consumption and playback that works in the browser, accepts VR video from any camera, and allows for playback on any VR device.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

With VR working natively in the browser, we can now easily scale out our solution to infinite lengths and allow anyone in the world with a modern browser and an internet connection to attend any live concert no matter where they are. We believe this opens the door to building out VR experiences for live show limited only by our imagination.

What we learned

VR is hard. As a bleeding edge technology, there's a lot of work left to bring it to the mainstream. However, there's not a clear path to getting there, and we're excited to be part of it.

What's next for Vthere

We will continue to iterate on the concert goer experience by integrating social interactions, adding multiple streams for each show to expose multiple viewing points, and finding a venue in SF that is willing to be a beta customer.

Be there with Vthere!
