I am the sole developer for the Android Application for Buddy Up (formerly known as Study Buddy).
I have a local JSON file of all the active study sessions' locations and load the coordinates into Google's MapView. Then I use a third lib to load the image url into the list. I learned a lot about using Google's map services and all of it was very easy to setup due to their great documentation.
