Inspiration
When we were breaking the ice and getting to know our teammates, we started talking about our backgrounds and what we were studying. That is when we realized that most of us had or were currently having the same problem: trying to find information about how to get financial help. That is when we realized that we could help ourselves and our community by building a tool to facilitate this process of looking for funding for universities
What it does
BuildingTuition is a web based app that has the ability to give students all the information they need not only about scholarships, but for bursaries as well. Scholarships are easily found online, but the information about bursaries are not. Bursaries are mostly based on financial needs, where the main requirement is usually only to meet a certain criteria and it’s focused on selected/marginalized groups. While scholarships are achievement based and a grant-in-aid to a student, bursaries are a monetary award to university students that allows them to continue their studies, which makes them really hard to find. With our app, users can also receive text messages to remind them of when the scholarship is due, helping them meet important deadlines.
How we built it
This website is built using Flask, python, HTML, CSS, Jinja and Bootstrap. It has a SQLite database, and also uses the Twilio API platform.
Challenges we ran into
The fact that we are all first timers, with English not being all of our first languages and how we are in 4 different time-zones made things a little more difficult, especially when figuring out how to use GitHub to collaborate and finding time to discuss our project.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Learning how to use GitHub, Figma, Jinja and a new API like Twilio in such a short time, plus managing our time and working with a team in our first big project is definitely something that we are all proud of.
What's next for BuildingTuition
Making a mobile version of BuildingTuition is our next goal.
