Working Prototype of CampMate Plugin

Inspiration && What it does

Introducing CampMate, our revolutionary ChatGPT plugin designed exclusively for campers! The plugin simply asks for your budget and specific camping requirements, and our intelligent AI-powered system will generate personalized recommendations tailored to your needs.

Whether you're a seasoned outdoor enthusiast or a first-time camper, our plugin takes the guesswork out of packing. It considers factors such as the duration of your trip, weather conditions, camping location, and activities you plan to engage in. Within your budget, the plugin will provide the price of the product, a link to the product purchase link, and a youtube video link to the review of the product.

So you spend less time shopping and more time exploring!

How we built it

CampMate is built on top OpenAI's GPT-4 model. We used python3 and FastAPI to serve up the plugin and we used Selenium to find the best product information on Amazon.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge we faced during our development was to find the best production information for our campers. This happened because we did not have access to the Amazon's Product API. To tackle this issue we switched to scraping products on Amazon using Selenium. We analyzed the total number of stars and the total number of reviews per product within the price range to suggest the best product to our campers.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are really proud that we were able to create a working prototype within 48 hours. As campers ourselves, we legitimately thought this would be really helpful for us when we were planning to go camping. Now that the prototype is working, we are excited about the impact it will create across the camping community.

What we learned

We learned how we can work with OpenAI's plugin system. We have also gained insights into addressing situations where we need to explore alternative approaches, such as transitioning from Amazon API to Web Scraping when the former is unavailable.

What's next for CampMate

Currently, the backend API for CampMate experiences some sluggishness, but we have plans to investigate and enhance its speed and optimization by exploring alternative options to Selenium.
