Inspiration
The inspiration for the development of the app stems from us as students wanting to have an amazing college experience and getting involved around campus especially after all of the social separation during the pandemic. A lot of us feel a bit of social anxiety when thinking about going back to in-person classes in the Fall 2021 semester and we think that this is a common thought for other students and underclassmen as well. We wanted to create a mobile app that serves as a catalyst to enable students to meet more people on campus and make friends!
What it does
CampusMeet is a mobile app with 5 core features being the Meet, Events, Chat, Feed, and Profile screen. With the Meet feature, users can let others know where they are on campus and what they want to do and meet up. With the Events feature, student orgs and greek life can market their events and it can serve as a way for users to stay in the know about what events are going on on campus. With the Chat feature, users can keep tabs on who they have met with in the past and chat with users or student orgs. With the Feed feature, users can post announcements, status updates, etc from people and organizations you have met. With the Profile feature, students can express themselves and showcase their personality on the app.
How we built it
CampusMeet was built using the React Native Framework and JavaScript as the language.
Challenges we ran into
One challenge was a lack of experience in different areas. Some of us were very new to coding and some of us were not very good with design. We tried to play to our strengths but also stay open-minded and work on our weaknesses on the side. Another was conflicting schedules. We decided to split up the work near the end to get more things done and trusted one another to produce quality work.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of seeing things through and submitting a project in less than 48 hours! This was some of our first times designing an app on the UI/UX side as well as some of our first times actually writing code. This was a very exciting experience and happy that we were at least able to submit a project!
What we learned
We learned so many new technical skills during this Hackathon. For some of us, it was our first time using Figma and doing UI/UX design and we learned the ins and outs of that which was really rewarding. For others, it was our first time coding so getting to learn, google, and watch videos was very exciting and eye-opening! We also learned how to work in a team setting, listen to different perspectives, and make decisions as a collective on how to continue to next steps throughout the project.
What's next for CampusMeet
We really believe this app has potential. For one, all of us would 100% download the app and use it in the Fall semester if it was a real app! We would love to continue working on this project with more skilled developers and a solid business plan.
