Carbon Conscious

Inspiration

Our inspiration comes from our shared concern for environmental issues, especially the impact of carbon emissions from aviation on climate change. We aimed to increase awareness about carbon footprints, enable more informed travel choices, support organizations in policy and regulation compliance, and contribute valuable data for environmental research and analysis.

What it does

The "Carbon Conscious" website features a carbon footprint calculator specifically designed for tracking carbon emissions from individual flights. This tool helps users understand the environmental impact of their air travel, encouraging them to make more environmentally friendly travel choices.

How we built it

The development process included brainstorming, assigning roles based on each team member's skills, trial and error, collaborative work, and adding finishing touches. We used JavaScript and React for the website development and Visual Studio Code for implementation. Google Maps was integrated to measure journey distances accurately. Our approach emphasized collaboration, flexibility, adaptability, and sharing of resources among team members.

Challenges we ran into

Our challenges were diverse, including learning each other's skill sets, becoming accustomed to the React developer environment, acquiring new skills, executing our ideas, and designing the website. Solutions involved active communication, trial and error, offering support and aid to each other, and being comfortable with continuous learning throughout the project.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of our ability to come together as a team, despite being beginners, and create a functional and impactful website. Our adaptability, shared growth, and the unity we demonstrated in purpose and action are significant accomplishments. We also take pride in having overcome the various challenges through teamwork and perseverance.

What we learned

Throughout this project, each team member learned new skills and gained a deeper understanding of the software development process, UI/UX design, and collaborative tools like GitHub. Specifically, Christina improved her implementation skills, Jennifer learned to work more effectively with GitHub, and Feng enhanced his front-end and UI/UX skills.
