The Catalyst! ๐ฅ
This is our first-ever project! We were unsure how effective we would be at tackling a real-world problem, so our goal was to make someone smile and think it was a bit funny. Our team, as a collective, loves games and cats, so we decided to merge the two, incorporating a cat 'memey' feel. Our goal is to create something lighthearted that we (and hopefully you) can look back fondly on. Additionally, some games of inspiration are Stardew
You did what? ๐ฎ
We exclusively used the Godot game engine for this project. Only two on our team had any knowledge/experience of the game engine. Which means our game will showcase everything that we've learned during this hackathon!
How did you do that? ๐คจ
Many, many, many tutorials and overview documents. In essence, we've created a main game connected by scenes, which are connected by scripts. It's a big tree! FatCat is 2D 2D-only game (sorry, no 3D) and has 4 main attributes. First, we created either a user interface scene or a 2D scene, each of which held a Gadot file script.
Trials and Tribulations. ๐ซฉ
We realllly struggled with our GitHub Repository and blending our numerous ideas into one. Despite using a one-game engine to create this project, we found it very challenging to format the aspects of our game. Especially, due to how different/new it is for us using a game engine than relying on a source code editor. Last but not least, trying to get as familiar with the game engine as we possibly could. Having our whole project rely on a new tool was no easy feat for us!
Our Triumphs! ๐
We're so proud that we actually created a final project! Even as college sophomores, this was not only our first hackathon but a full-fledged project. It's a privilege that we're able to arrive safely and learn in an environment that encourages learning.
Knowledge Gained! ๐ง
- An introductory overview of an open-source game engine by executing our own game!
- How intensive games are, no matter the perceived difficulty.
- How 2d and file scripts interact.
- Problem-solving and project organization (definitely the most learned).
Next Destination? ๐โโ๏ธ
Sadly, we did not get to add all of the features we wanted to! But best believe, we really want to figure this out and have a completed game. Here are some of them:โค๏ธ
- Attack Feature
- Risk/Reward Power Up System
- A Continuous Best Score Count
- Final Boss
- Personalizing Assets
- Improvement of the Current Script
Built With
- canva
- github
- godot
- itchio
