๐ก Inspiration
It is often said that teaching is the best way to learn. We want to apply this principle to language learning and enable students in the same class to teach each other. So we came up with the idea of making a shared dictionary where students can collaborate together. As someone who wants to learn a foreign language, learning the meaning of words might be hard & boring. With this web app, language becomes fun, interactive, collaborative, and inclusive!
๐ป What it does
Classroom Dictionary helps students increase their vocabulary in a new language, and also understanding of each word through interactive dictionary, and flash card maker. The best part is that students can teach each other about new words and share their knowledge. Any student can add a new word that they donโt understand to the dictionary, and other students can provide definitions. Students can also specify the language they prefer to have a word explained in, this enables students who share the same first language to help each other. In addition, they can learn the sign language of that word to be more inclusive!
๐จ How we built it
First we discussed our idea, and sketched the layout of the website, then we manually coded the website using:
HTML & CSS = To build the layout of the website Javascript = To build the functionality of the flashcards, dictionary, and also to display the camera result. We used the localStrorage API to store content for flashcards. TensorFlow JS = To train the machine learning sign language camera
๐ง Challenges we ran into
All 3 of us have extremely different time zones so it was quite a struggle, but thankfully we distributed the workload in advance and finished it in time! We also came across a few bugs, internet issues and at one point the camera wasnโt accurate. But with teamwork and dedication we solved it in time and have all the features working.
๐ Accomplishments that we're proud of
We successfully finished a fully working website in a very short time, despite all the bugs and the new skills we need to do!
๐ What's next for Classroom Dictionary
We would like to add more features, such as audio control and pronunciation detector. Weโd also like to make this app even more inclusive by allowing students to ask about new words using sign language.
