Inspiration
Our team was very passionate about global warming and climate change. We wanted to make an interactive game that was both fun and also educational.
What it does
Climate Change Simulator (CC Sim) is an interactive game where users make decisions to halt the progress of global warming. The purpose of it is to teach people about the effects of global warming, along with possible ways to mitigate it. CC Sim is also meant to be interactive, so that users find the learning process interesting.
Users are put in the position of the President of the United States. They can make decisions depending on markers that show up on a map of the USA, and depending on whether they make the decision that is better for helping climate change, their score will increase or decrease. Their goal is to stop climate change before the year 2030.
How we built it
We used Repl.it, HTML5, CSS, and Javascript for the framework of the website, and the features. The map was built using the Google Maps API.
Challenges we ran into
- Implementing the map with the right API and API key
- Creating the interactive boxes when you click a marker
- Creating the intro screen
- At first we thought that Google Maps has an error, but turns out you need to pay for it to access the whole thing. We didn't plan on that so we left it in Developer Mode
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Creating the interactive dialog boxes to work with the Google Maps API
- Coming up with the features we wanted and being able to execute them
- Thinking of the unique events and decisions a user can encounter
- Using photoshop for the clipart
What we learned
- Learning how to use the Google Maps API in a website
- Learning how to make it interactive with multiple layers
- Creating an intro screen
What's next for Climate Change Simulator
- There are definitely some improvements we would make if we had the time and resources: - More choices and events - Different modes, such as higher difficulty, to provide a more game-like experience - Purchase the premium version of Google Maps to remove watermarks and calling limits - Add scoring system
