csci.club Website Application

I. Info

This project was a product of the carlHacks hackathon. We configured and designed a website that has the ability to send text notifications to users when new content is pushed to the site. The admin page lets users with an admin account post news and updates. When these updates are published, the Twilio api is utilized to send a text to users that are subscribed to receive text messages.

II. Story

Our team attends/runs a computer science club at school. We have noticed that email based notifications are ineffective. Our goal was to create a method of communication that transcends the barriers of email communication. We found the Twilio functionality fit our needs perfectly. So we designed a solution that solved the need for sending emails, and increases visibility for our club.

III. Setup

Download the source code and import the createUser.sql with phpmyadmin from /sql directory into the MySql database.

Change the DBUSER, DBPASS in /includes/config.php as required and also change path define urls for Dir, AdminDir and SiteTitle if required!!

I worked on the backend, creating all the basic framework using php, html and MySql. I designed and programmed the admin end of the application which can add, edit and delete the posts for the website. I also tackled to access the admin end of the application using PHP whose signup part was made on ruby on rails by Jared. I also integrated the Twilio API into the core of the application which allows to send notification text message about the the content posted in the website to subscribers and users.

I worked on the back end and implemented the user sign in and sign up part of the database as well as helped with parts of the front end.

Coordinated project development, set deadlines, assisted in high level design. Integrated the php functionality written by another member into user webpage.

AndrewMorris-scsu
I worked on the front end of the website with majority of design from bootstrap. I brainstormed ideas about the content of the page with other members and implemented the topics we wanted in the website that served the best for the need SCSU's Computer SCIence (CSCI) Club. I integrated all the available resources for the club to one single repository tying the club's mission/vision with school's resources to create a platform for young computer scientists.
