CropCrafters
Inspiration
As our team discussed the environmental issues in our community, we noted that there are certainly ways for the average person to make a difference, however, the information and resources to do so aren't very accessible. We decided to focus on hydroponics, a method of organic and eco-friendly food production, which can easily be done on a smaller scale.
What it does
Users start off by selecting a growth system out of the six options displayed. They can weigh in factors such as difficulty, space, maintenance, and cost when making their selection. After selecting a growth system, a dropdown menu will appear, prompting the user to enter their city. After selecting their city, a list of potential plants that can be grown in the given city and with the selected system is displayed. The user may look through the plant options, and expand dropdowns to read more about the details of the plant's maintenance, growth time, and growth difficulty.
How we built it
We began by sketching out a flow plan for the website and figuring out the user's perspective. This involved deciding on the functionality aspect of the project. We then created a database of the systems, cities, and plants, and their corresponding statistics such as temperature, humidity, and compatibility. We created 6 buttons with images and text for each growth system and set up the buttons to trigger the visibility of a dropdown menu upon being clicked. We used a form to create the dropdown menu, which would allow the user to select a city, and then receive their plants.
Challenges we ran into
We ran into difficulties making the buttons trigger the visibility of the dropdown menu and creating an auto-scroll feature when the button was clicked.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We successfully made our webpage provide unique results for each combination of cities and systems, thus effectively catering to specific user needs.
What we learned
We learned a lot about javascript and HTML because we had little to no experience in those languages when we began.
What's next for CropCrafters
With a larger database and more specific information, CropCrafters can easily be expanded to cover new cities and plants. Using a database that closely tracks temperatures in each city year-round, CropCrafters can give more specific information on the ideal best time to plant each crop.
