Cube Route

Visualisation of Live Bus Data in Minecraft, commands to map any area of Great Britain's Bus Stops and then track the buses within that area live using the BODS API

Key Points

  • Map Bus Stops from any section of Great Britain
  • Visualise Live Bus Routes at any scale
  • Provides an informative and accessible exploration of a nationwide issue on local communities
  • A fun insight into the benefit of a Universal Solution to the lack of data transparency

Design

Being a Minecraft plugin, the majority of our work was completed in Java. This involved interacting with various sources of data, including the Bus Open Data Service API and a CSV File. In order to get real time data, we used the GTFS Realtime protocol. This allowed us to show updates as soon as possible.

Challenges

Overall, while the project was a very enjoyable process we did hit a couple of snags. Working with Gradle for the first time was a bit of a learning experience.

While one team member didn't initially know Java, we mitigated this by implementing pair programming.
