Inspiration
Noticing a gap in digital platforms for our university community, we set out to create something unique. Enter CUNYConnect: a dedicated social app for students, fostering connections, sharing experiences, and even adding a touch of humor with professor roasts. Our aim? To enrich our university experience by providing a tailored space for us to connect, collaborate, and make lasting memories.
How we built it
We used HTML and CSS for the frontend to design the interface. JavaScript powered the backend, handling dynamic functionalities like user authentication and data storage. This combination allowed us to create a seamless and user-friendly platform.
Challenges we ran into
Initially, we attempted to implement data storage using both SQL and NoSQL databases but encountered difficulties and were unable to proceed. Subsequently, we invested significant time, approximately 4-5 hours, in setting up Firebase for our database needs. Although we made some progress, we faced challenges that prevented its successful implementation. Ultimately, we were unable to establish a functioning database as initially intended.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of our innovative idea, even though we faced challenges in its implementation. Our platform addresses a genuine need in our university community, offering a dedicated space for student interaction and engagement. Despite setbacks, we're committed to continuously improving our platform to better serve our users.
What we learned
Our experience taught us the value of teamwork and collaboration in pursuing a common goal. We honed our time management skills through the process, recognizing the importance of efficient task allocation and prioritization. Despite encountering obstacles, we gained valuable insights into setting up Firebase, albeit with some setbacks. Overall, the journey provided us with invaluable lessons in resilience, adaptability, and the importance of continuous learning and improvement.
What's next for CunyConnect
Although we faced challenges in implementing our initial plans, our vision for CUNYConnect remains unwavering. Moving forward, our priority is to complete the project and transform it into the official app for CUNY students. We're committed to refining our platform, addressing any remaining issues, and implementing the features we initially envisioned. With dedication and perseverance, we aim to create a thriving digital community tailored specifically to the needs of CUNY students, enhancing their university experience and fostering meaningful connections.
