Inspiration
The main inspiration for this project is the approach of Christmas, and the reality of the limited money we have on hand. We thought that this would be a good problem to tackle as it is practical and useful in the long term.
What it does
Cutie Savers is a program that allows users to enter their income and the percentage of their income that they are willing to spend, and then create categories of the products that they buy. They can then display a menu that helps them keep track of their expenditures per category and overall remaining budget.
How we built it
We used a combination of GitHub and Visual Studio Code, primarily with C++. We thought of options that the user would need and created a menu based on those ideas -- implementing it using class-based object oriented programming.
Challenges we ran into
The majority of our members were unfamiliar with Git and GitHub, so we spent a significant chunk of our time trying to set up and learn the software. More specifically, merge conflicts and branching issues were major roadblocks, and we experienced network issues when attempting to commit.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
For the majority of the team, it was our first hackathon so the biggest accomplishment was that we finished the project, as we were aware that many people who come to hackathons end up not finishing in time.
What we learned
We learned how to navigate GitHub, use Git, and use their collaborative features in tandem with Visual Studio Code. We also learned how to create programs together as a team and solve merge conflicts, as well as new programming concepts.
What's next for Cutie Savers
We think the next step would be to create a user friendly app to incorporate the program, and to create a scanner that could use image recognition to input data from receipts.
