Inspiration

Our largest inspiration was the indie game YOMI Hustle. Our art and general vibe was heavily influenced by the game. Street fighter helped us understand the basic fighting mechanics we wanted to develop. We used the Risk of Rain 2 Void Fiend as a reference for how we wanted to accomplish our offensive system.

What it does

Its a 1 versus 1 fighting game with a dance battle theme! The first player to win 2 fights wins the match. There are 3 kinds of attacks light, medium, and heavy. These attacks can be combined together to create combos. On top of these basic attacks players can block, parry, and dash to give themselves an edge in battle. If a player lands enough hits they enter offensive mode which means they will deal more damage and are much faster, however, they also take more damage.

How we built it

We built Dance Fighter using the Unity Engine. All our art, animations, and assets were made by us and we mainly used Aseprite to make them. We used Github to work in our own scenes and then combined all our new features in one scene.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge we ran into was trying to make a good combo system and making sure the moves connected one after another. Another big challenge was combining all the scenes into one before a checkpoint it was very time consuming and filled with many errors.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of being able to make a fully functional 2D fighting game in only four months while having to make absolutely everything from scratch. It showed that we are able to manage our time well even when all being full time students.

What we learned

What we learned is that it is very hard and messy to fix things when they are not structured right at the beginning.

What's next for Dance Fighter

Next we plan to implement online multiplayer and to flesh out the combo system with more moves. We also want to add more music, stages, and even new characters.
