Inspiration
Our local community fridge at UCSB and the fact that half of UCSB undergrad students face food insecurity drove us to learn more about how we can fix this problem. People aren't starving but healthy food and produce is often inaccessible and, without it, leads to health problems which only brings an even heavier burden on the wallets of the financially constrained.
What it does
DAOchow is a decentralized app that allows people who are food insecure to receive food from community fridges. Our project relies on the technology of Decentralized Autonomous Organizations to manage funds in a purely democratic fashion, without the risk of embezzlement from a central authority.
How we built it
We used React and Tailwind to build out the frontend. Additionally, we used Azure to host the web app. We implemented Tensorflow for the ML model and Aragon as the framework to set up our DAO/web3 platform.
Challenges we ran into
Working with cryptocurrency posed unique difficulties such as making sure that conversion rates were accurate and that our users would have an easy way of paying online. This was the first time we worked with a DAO and used it to build a web3 app.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We built a fully fledged web3 app in 36 hours, which had a fully-functioning DAO and a friendly frontend UI.
What we learned
We learned how to parse through large datasets and analyze the data, using API calls, Tailwind CSS components to build website, working with Microsoft Azure cloud. We learned about the DAO, decentralized autonomous organization, and this blockchain can be an effective way to organize a nonprofit that is more transparent with less corruption and embezzlement.
What's next for DAOchow
We plan on using the dataset from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to generate the next locations for new fridges to be placed where it can impact the most amount of people. We plan on expanding DAOchow by bringing in warehouses full of food for the food insecure instead of local fridges. We also plan on upgrading the UI for our website,
