Inspiration
We are all Western science students who enjoy Biology and are interested in promoting a healthy and well-balanced lifestyle. We chose to create a social environment to incentify healthy living based on the idea of "evolving" into a fitter individual. This is why all the themes and features of the game (including food, budgeting, fitness, productivity, and sleep) are all adding points to your overall fitness.
What it does
“darWINism” is a fun interactive app that engages the user to make healthy life choices through friendly competition. The user is ranked against their friends in an evolutionary arms race. By taking pictures of their daily habits, the user’s friends are given the opportunity to verify their accomplishments to gain evolutionary fitness! The more points you have, the further you rise in the phylogenetic tree and the more badges you unlock! In addition, the more friends you invite, the more points you can gain!
How we built it
We used Figma to establish the UI of “darWINism.” This allows for an easy visualization of how the app will flow together. We hope this prototype will be built into an actual app someday.
Challenges we ran into
Narrowing our ideas into a single coherent app design was a big challenge. We had too many ideas we wanted to incorporate into this app, which made the app too complicated. To overcome this challenge, we made a mind-map of all our ideas and only incorporated the main ones. Also, we have very little coding experience so this made it hard to find a place to start.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud that we were able to design an app prototype from scratch. We are also proud that we were able to incorporate our science background into our first hackathon experience.
What we learned
None of us have used Figma before or created a design from start to finish. We have gained a lot of experience in design ideation and collaboration. Most importantly, we have gained a basic understanding of UI and UX for the first time.
What's next for darWINism
“darWINism” will hopefully be developed into an android app using Android Studio or an iOS app using Xcode. We found that the Firebase platform would allow us to build an app using a host of features such as a database, verification and app indexing. In addition, we would like to connect other social media platforms and potentially collect other forms of data from technology such as fitbit.
