Inspiration

puzzle games were the main idea, namely, games that utilized mechanics of escort missions, and time manipulation, the game "shade shift" was also thought of for the unique mechanicians it incorporated and cybersecurity CTFs.

it should be noted that we didn't initially think of doing a puzzle game at the beginning of the hackathon but due to our lack of knowledge and experience in web development and usage of APIs, using Game Maker became our next best thing.

What it does do

The overall idea was to create a puzzle-based story game where each level would utilize and emphasize one game mechanic that the level would be centered around, in this case, each level would be a different puzzle and an overarching narrative behind them.

How we built it

initially, we used java but due to the frustration of the swing library, we eventually decided to switch over to Game maker and GML since the usage of the game engine seemed somewhat understandable and thus learnable within our time constraints, unlike Unity which was also looked at.

Additional assets were either taken from the web or drawn via pixel art drawing software.

Challenges we ran into

coming up with an idea that was both realistic to complete given our time frame and a project that was also unique and not too easy/boring to complete.

Using Game Maker also had its difficulties given half of our team had never used a game engine before and none of us had used Game Maker before, but, thankfully, Google was good enough to solve most of our problems.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

For coming up with an idea that wasn't too ambitious for the first time, given our history of scrapping program functionality often due to time constraints, and likewise for finishing a hackathon project that isn't broken in some way or another when submitted.

What we learned

How to use Game Maker and a tad bit of Unity and Svelte. We also learned that full-stack web development isn't that easy to master in 24hrs :|.
