Inspiration

Language barriers in daily interactions are a common problem. There is currently limited access to internet-dependent translation services, mobile data not always available, and human interpreter time is expensive. All of this presents challenges in emergencies, healthcare, and travel.

What it does

Dialingua is like Google translate over the phone. No apps to install, no internet connection needed. Just dial a number, select the desired language pair, and start speaking. Dialingua caters to emergency services, healthcare, and business sectors, as well as individuals, and can be easily tailored to any country or language.

How I built it

The project is built entirely from scratch during the hackathon, utilizing Google Cloud, Twilio, and lightweight open source language models, Vosk. The base is a lil python app running on an ngrok server.

Challenges I ran into

Typical cloud service struggles :) Service role permission management, etc.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

First time using telephony APIs!

What I learned

To use telephony APIs!

What's next for Dualingua

Concurrent call support, more languages, conference call support.
