An app for new immigrants that recommends a location in Canada for them to settle down in, based on some optional questions. Uses data from the Canadian Census.
We wanted to improve the transition for newcomers to Canada by building a community and fostering a sense of belonging and community for individuals who may be feeling isolated in a new and unfamiliar place.
Our app provides practical assistance to newcomers as they may be more comfortable and able to navigate a new country with the support of people from their own cultural backgrounds.
We designed the backend algorithm that determines the best City/Town using the Canadian Census, and the pandas library for python to process the massive amounts of data. The framework is Flask, and the website was made using html and css.
It was our first time doing a hackathon, so combining the backend with the frontend was a completely new experience for us.
The app works extremely well, and accurately recommends cities/towns that meet the requirements.
In the future, we will improve the UI, and implement new search filters, as well as have the ability to display multiple options for the users to choose from.
