Eco Tox

Inspiration

We waste 2.12 billion tons of trash each year without considering the negative consequences of our actions. We throw items everyday, every week, and every year pulling us closer to our planet's demise. We were inspired by the potential of interactive learning to foster environmental sustainability to bring awareness to everyday pollution in our homes. EcoTox was born from the idea that education can be both engaging and enlightening, especially when it comes to understanding the hidden life of everyday products and their impact on our world. By empowering high school and college students with knowledge, we believe they can make a real difference in this world little by little.

Team Members:

Abisoye: Developed the back-end, talked to mentors, and researched how each item negatively impacts our planet!

Djoni: Designed the game's logo, helped improve the gameplay, talked to mentors, created slides for our presentation, contributed marketing research to better market our product and contacted potential stakeholders!

Karen: Created the game design and gameplay and talked to mentors to find ways to better market our game!

Mentors/Contributors: Massi, Judy, Inaam, Shitangshu, Kexin

What it does

EcoTox is an innovative game that educates players about the toxic chemicals in common everyday items and their environmental consequences by clicking pieces of drawings or buttons on the screen. Through play, users learn about the lifecycle of products and the importance of making sustainable choices to protect our ecosystems.

How we built our prototype

We leveraged the power of Adobe Express, HTML, CSS, Python, and MongoDB to design a visually compelling prototype that captures the essence of our vision. Our team carefully crafted each element, ensuring that the game’s interface is not only intuitive but also a catalyst for change.

Challenges we ran into

One of the most significant hurdles we faced was the lack of readily available data on the toxicological profiles of everyday products. The challenge of compiling a structured database from scratch tested our resolve, but it also highlighted the necessity of our mission.

We didn't include an explanation for the pipes underneath the room floors because it made our video over the 4-min limit. Our drainage pipes redirect the user to another page which allows them to see toxicological profiles of whichever item they click.

Along with lack of explanation, we weren't able to present a functional prototype. We were busy working on the game design and game play and asking mentors for guidance to improve our game overall.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are immensely proud of creating a comprehensive database that underpins the educational foundation of EcoTox. Our success in designing a captivating game and brand design that resonates with our message is a testament to our team’s creativity and dedication.

What we learned

  • The complexities of environmental pollutants
  • The principles of game design
  • The power of teamwork and sharing knowledge

What's next for Eco Tox

The future is bright for EcoTox. We plan to develop a full web game, a VR 3D game, and a Web API that will serve as a gateway to our database of everyday products and their toxic pollutants. Our goal is to make EcoTox a cornerstone of environmental education, inspiring action and fostering a culture of sustainability.
