Inspiration
This past year, people have really had to face the reality of death. We live in a death-denial culture where we are more comfortable just ignoring death but by doing so, we also ignore those who are dying.
The problem we chose to tackle:
Those nearing end-of-life report being anxious, unprepared and isolated. Logistical tasks are left to the last minute and relationships are not complete as loved ones shun the dying. This is caused by existing in a death-denial culture caused by industrialization and the advancement of medicine.
Target audience:
Those nearing end-of-life, including chronically and/or terminally ill patients of all ages, as well as their family and friends.
What it does
Eli is a web app where users nearing end-of-life can easily complete their logistical last steps, plan fun activities they’d like to do before passing, and invite loved ones to do them with. It highlights the elephant in the room and solves the pervasive problem of loneliness and death anxiety.
How I built it
Eli a NodeJS web app written in typescript that uses express and handlebars to process HTTP requests and render pages. The database is postgresql using the Sequelize ORM on top to manage DB requests.
The web app can be viewed here. Please use the following login info:

Figuring out how to make modals using as much vanilla CSS and html was a new challenge as frontend design is new to us and we were learning how to make everything look as polished as possible. Also setting up databases and schemas was an interesting challenge that came up, as there are a lot of moving parts that have relations to each other.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
I'm really proud of having created an authorization system that lets users signup and create accounts that can be customized to be used as they wish
What I learned
I learned about web design and principals that are useful to consider as well as tips and tricks for making everything look more polished and functional
What's next for Eli
Create an "about page" to allow people to leave their emails to receive updates and share the web app with program managers at senior homes and online to gather feedback.
