Problem Addressed

Eve addresses the urgent need to protect youth from the harmful consequences of engaging with online content that lacks substance and nuance. Beyond concerns about excessive access to misinformation or harmful material, the issue revolves around the potential for such exposure to lead to intellectual and socio-emotional immaturity in young individuals. This can result in poor problem-solving skills, uninformed judgments, and a tendency to prioritize personal feelings over rational discourse. Furthermore, it can manifest in their social and emotional lives, fostering harmful actions and a disregard for societal norms.

If left unaddressed, this problem could have severe long-term effects on youth development, potentially leading to a generation of less-informed and emotionally immature adults, with implications spanning across various facets of society, from family and parenting to the workforce, public service, and education. The challenge is not merely about restricting access to media but rather finding effective strategies to prevent these negative outcomes and foster the growth of well-rounded, intellectually prepared, and emotionally mature individuals. And Eve does so not by telling the youth what to believe, but by helping them evaluate what they learn and how they think.

Solution Proposed

Eve is an interactive browser extension that aids young users in developing critical thinking skills and acquiring knowledge by providing relevant resources and guidance while consuming online content, rather than restricting their access.

Eve offers one-click access to learning resources, engages users in interactive evaluations, and facilitates community integration with discourse. This comprehensive approach aims to nurture well-rounded and holistic perspectives on a wide range of topics, empowering young individuals to navigate the digital landscape with greater knowledge and discernment.

Intended Audience

Eve is designed for young people navigating the digital landscape, particularly those who may be at risk of forming a weak foundation in critical thinking due to exposure to misinformation and harmful content online. The intended users of Eve are those seeking to enhance their critical thinking skills in both intellectual and socio-emotional dimensions by providing them with additional resources and guidance related to the online content they consume, with opportunities to interactively process and evaluate their online content, and with a platform to understand others' thoughts and perspectives on the particular content, helping them develop a more holistic understanding of various topics while maintaining their online engagement.

How Solution Was Developed

The team started off by conducting UX research to dictate the extension’s human-centered design direction. With brainstorming using affinity diagrams, crafting a user persona, and mapping a user journey, they delved into the ideation process to conceptualize their browser extension that addresses critical thinking gaps in the youth due to their misuse and misconsumption of online content. Finally, the team utilized a multidisciplinary approach to prototyping with graphic design and UX/UI design on Figma.
