Inspiration

In today's world, it's much harder to attain relevant information due to the over saturation. It has made everyone seems much more distant and disconnected. As such, our team goal is to create a more closely knitted community through our application.

What it does

Our app does what mobile apps do best. It gathers necessary information about events happening near the users and present it in a streamlined way that entices the users.

How we built it

Utilize React Native, we build a mobile app that could operate on cross-platform. It is to ensure that everyone has access to the new innovation with no-one feeling left out. Not only that, we deployed FireBase backend which can be scaled to a substantial size, while keeping all the data confidential and safe. Moreover, the app also prioritizes the organizers' experience. Our intuitive add-on website provides the organizers a simple, yet effective method to publish the events.

Challenges we ran into

It was quite a challenging task to create both a mobile app and a website from scratch under 24 hours. With only two developers on the team, it became an even larger obstacle. Some other challenges we ran into was narrowing down the scope of our porject to stay focused on facilitating events. It was very easy to keep adding features that do not directly facilitate event searching, browsing, or filtering. For example, we considered if having the weather in our 3D map concept was part of our goals but decided it was superfluous to the exact goal's we were trying to fulfill for the user.

Another issue we ran into was that we didn't consider both the user facing side and the organizer facing side of the client. We had to pivot and make sure that we created 2 interfaces to fully have a functional application.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are most proud of the fact that we were able to create such a large amount of content within the hackathon time period. We created a full-featured UI mockup in Figma with many layouts and views, while we also implemented a large amount of the features both in frontend and backend. We were able to get our frontend communicating with the backend, enabling us to fetch and update data. Finally, we are also proud of the fact that we stayed the entire night and did not go home.

What we learned

We learned a lot from this hackathon. As developers, we started out with no mobile development knowledge and ended up creating a mobile app for our project. We started out with little web experience and ended up creating a web app interface for the backend. In addition, we learned a lot about creating and managing databases. Our UI designer and product managers were able to learn a lot from the mentors that were available.

We learned that it is very important to set out a clear plan of implementation and scope of the project. It is also important to communicate throughout to make sure that the design and implementation are aligned and that the projects are moving in the same directions. Furthermore, sketching and discussing is a good brainstorming method to generate ideas and concepts before coding or designing. We also learned business concepts over take any implementation ideas.

What's next for Event Quest

We aim to expand EventQuest to integrate it into cities. We also hope to add more robustness to the user's calendar so that they can view all their upcoming events lined up, allow them to customize their avatars, incorportate augmented reality amongst many other features.
