Inspiration
The mysteries of the universe have always fascinated us. With space exploration at the forefront of global innovation and education often lagging behind in engagement, we wanted to build something that could inspire curiosity while teaching science. Exo Worlds was born out of the desire to merge cutting-edge AI, real exoplanet data, and simulation gaming into an educational and imaginative experience.
What it does
Exo Worlds is an educational simulation game that allows users to explore, analyse, and colonize real exoplanets using scientific data. Players interact with an AI assistant named Astro Buddy, who guides them through planetary conditions, survival strategies, and colony development. The platform teaches astronomy, astrobiology, and environmental science through interactive storytelling and decision-making.
How we built it
We built Exo Worlds using dummy JSON to simulate fetching real exoplanet data and Gemini API for fun and interactive educational content.
All simulations were designed to feel engaging while maintaining a strong educational foundation.
Challenges we ran into
- Creating a balance between scientific accuracy and user-friendly gameplay.
- Integrating AI responses in a visually clean way without overflow bugs.
- Finding high-quality, open exoplanet datasets that were rich enough to simulate diverse planetary systems.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Developed a visually stunning UI with interactive modules powered by real AI.
- Created a functional and fun Astro Buddy chatbot that simplifies complex space science.
- Bridged the gap between learning and gaming through a single unified platform.
What we learned
- The importance of crafting precise AI prompts to ensure meaningful educational dialogue.
- Handling real-time rendering and layout challenges in chat interfaces.
- How to connect scientific datasets meaningfully to gameplay mechanics.
What's next for Exo Worlds
- Adding multiplayer colony challenges and planetary diplomacy.
- Voice-controlled interaction with Astro Buddy for enhanced accessibility.
- Integration with NASA APIs for live celestial events and data updates.
- Launching a school-mode version tailored for educators to use in classrooms.
