Inspiration
The problem of diversity in clinical trials is incredibly important, and we wanted to explore ways to solve it.
What it does
EZTrials provides a way to bridge the gap between the diverse population who is needed in clinical trials and the clinical trial sites and studies. The details on clinical trial site posting can be hard for the average person to parse, and the application process can be even more convoluted. Having people's profiles be created and then shared with clinical trial sites in just one places centralizes the process, making the challenge of selecting specific populations for diversity easier to solve.
How we built it
Due to our limited experience, we decided to make the project in pure Java with a CLI made for both prospective trial applicants and trial sites to connect with each other. But, this base logic could be used for the implementation of a similar concept in a website.
Challenges we ran into
We are definitely a beginner group, so even though we had a good idea of the what our application would include, we ran into many difficulties with implementing our ideas due to limited technical expertise. However, we stuck through it and figured out enough of the basics to build the foundation of our concept.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The biggest accomplishment for us was that for some of us, this is the first time we are getting our own creative ideas out in code, not just for a school assignment or test preparation. It was always exciting when we had an idea and we could find a way to get it to work.
What we learned
We learned a significant amount about planning and collaboration, we didn't come in with an idea and it took a while to determine what direction we wanted to take. We found it difficult to split tasks between group members so that everyone had a similar amount of work. We also learned the basics of git and the IntelliJ IDE.
What's next for EZ Trials
We would like to incorporate more functionality for trial sites using the product for sure. We would also like to improve the UI, possibly incorporating the functionality into a mobile app for ease of use.
