Inspiration

More and more systems are put into place daily to combat hate-speech directed towards members of the AAPI community. However, not as much can/is being done to help assist those in the community that are at risk of being a victim of actual violence. We noticed that in both young and old potential victims, they often carry smartphones with them. Thus, we decided to try to make an application that would take a smartphone and turn it into a viable personal protection device/way to quickly contact authorities when an act of violence has been committed against them.

What it does

Detects when the user falls using measurements from gyroscope and accelerometer on their phone. Countdown from 30 seconds starts when the user status changes to fall. Users will have 30 seconds to check up with the application before it automatically notifies emergency contact. The application will also start recording any audio from the phone if the safety button is not pressed. Displays current status of user: stable, falling, recording.

How we built it

We built this application using: React Native Expo Java Script CSS Google-cloud Github

Challenges we ran into

Coming into the hackathon, only one of our members had prior experience using React Native or Javascript. However due to the nature of the solution, we were able to collaborate and figure out React Native.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of creating a working prototype that makes use of gyroscope and accelerometer data with artificial intelligence to consistently identify and differentiate between sudden movements such as jumping vs movements that could indicate a potential act of violence, such as falling to the ground.

What we learned

We learned about how to use phones as sensors to give more information about a person’s current situation. From a technology standpoint, we were able to learn about mobile development using react native as well as sensor data from accelerometers and gyroscopes. From a collaboration standpoint, we learned how to collaborate efficiently using gitHub, as well as using our different strengths to split tasks in order to complete them under time pressure.

What's next for Fall Da Wei

In case of an emergency, the app will automatically notify a family member/friend. Users will be given an option to input who should be notified. When users are at home, they will be given an option to toggle the app on/off to prevent accidental emergency alerts. With the use of AI and the Cloud, the app will be able to detect Asian hate words via audio recording to determine if a hate crime is being committed.
