Imagine your smart home system, built to enhance your life, being secretly manipulated without detection to increase the energy cost — even when it claims to spot anomalies. Such vulnerabilities in smart home controls with smart sensor-based activity detection can hit your pocket and put your loved ones in harm's way. It's not science fiction; it's a reality today. Ensuring a comprehensive security analysis isn't just beneficial; it's crucial. Our inspiration for building the developed tool was to provide a threat analytics solution to users without security knowledge. The proposed tool can help homeowners decide about choosing control and security solutions for their home without relying solely on a 3rd party.

How we built it

We crafted our solution using a suite of tools and advanced technologies. At its core, we developed a cross-platform mobile application that seamlessly communicates with a real-time Firebase database. To bolster the app's capabilities, we incorporated a reinforcement learning-based threat analytics system, built using Python. This integration of diverse tools and methodologies ensured a robust and dynamic product.

Challenges we ran into

During the course of our project, we encountered challenges that tested our resolve and adaptability. Firstly, the ever-ticking clock proved to be our most formidable adversary. With limited time at our disposal, striving to deliver a comprehensive solution was an uphill battle. We often found ourselves wishing for the opportunity to construct a hardware testbed, allowing us to test our threat analytics in real-time scenarios. Additionally, while having a team comprising solely of multi-domain experts seemed advantageous on paper, it occasionally led to hurdles in decision-making.
