Inspiration
We built this project with the intention to make personal deliveries more convenient. Although there are many delivery services out there now, we realized there isn’t one where it was more personal – like Carousell, where people can request for ad-hoc tasks, and discuss the price for the task to be completed. Tasks that are more ad-hoc come in many forms, this application hopes that it can help these people:
- Elderly: Ask for people to get medication for them.
- Carousell Users: Settle more inconvenient “meet-up” purchases.
- SHN People: Allows them to settle meetups with people.
What it does
HelpLah connects you to a "middle-man" living near you or your delivery destination. This "middle-man" user will go to you and then to your destination to get your things delivered for a fee. Since all the discussion is done between the users, planning where to meet, special instructions, and even delivery fee can be settled between them, HelpLah just serves as a platform for people to post tasks for others to help with.
How we built it
We used GitHub to collaborate on the project, Android(Java) for the app logic, xml for app UI, Picasso for loading images, and firebase firestore for storing the app's data and firebase authentication for the user authentication.
Challenges we ran into
The bulk of the challenge was to make a simple enough prototype to show our wide concept without exceeding the time limit. As our app can be expanded in many places due to its multi-faceted nature, we had to drill down to the core of our app and work on only those features.
Accomplishments that we are proud of
We managed to get most of our application up and running, with many of our planned core features like the Sliding Order main menu and chat menu done.
What we learned
We mostly learnt teamwork and how to better work in a team environment, especially with remote working situations. That meant knowing how to properly use version control and keeping everyone updated. One of our team members were also down with fever halfway through the hackathon, so we had to adapt the workload to better fit 3 members.
What's next for HelpLah
If we could make this app better, we would like to include these features:
- AI based recommendation of tasks to better find appropriate people to do tasks.
- Scheduled tasks, meaning people could “subscribe” to do a task every week for someone. Useful for medication collection, food collection etc.
- API endpoint for different companies to outsource tasks in a more massive scale, or allow integration as a delivery service in their app
