Inspiration
We started by writing down things that we do as college students that make us feel less stressed and listed our own interests to incorporate into the theme of ‘Healthier Future’ since we aimed our product to relate and cater towards college students. One of our teammates mentioned a fish and fish tanks as something they have interest in so we used that simple idea and created it into a brand: Fishtank, where us students are part of a sea of fish aiming to find our pod in college– the tank. We found that as college students navigating stress, anxiety, and a balanced life, we like listening to music, working out, and hanging out with friends. We combined these interests and solutions into a single app. We thought about the meaning of a ‘healthier future’ and reflected that healthy people create healthier environments considering that many studies show that a healthy, happy mind produces better productive working outcomes that benefit the future in the long term. We narrowed down our target to be specifically college students since we can confidently speak from experience how this app can help us feel less stressed. More futuristic aspects of our app include our decision to integrate AI to help us get data, like events happening around the user’s area.
How we built it
We utilized Figma’s FigJam to brainstorm ideas and a Figma design file to create components, branding, a low fidelity mockup, a high fidelity mockup, and a wireframe prototype. We created the branding portion, which includes the logo, color scheme, and typography, in Adobe Illustrator.
Challenges we ran into
It took us a long time to narrow down our ideas and come up with a new and unique project. The theme isn’t too specific so the way people understand it depends on their point of view. Our group had to reflect and specify to each other how we perceive the theme ‘healthier future’ meant. We also had a hard time estimating the scope of our project and how many pages are needed to make sure it’s user-friendly and not too confusing.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We’re mostly proud of being able to finish our project before the deadline despite it being very detailed and having many parts. We’re proud that we challenged ourselves to create a whole brand in a limited amount of time. We tried to do as many things as we can that are outside of our comfort zone which led us to learn a lot from each other. We also had very clear communication throughout the process which helped a lot so that we are all going in the same direction and know what each person is doing so there weren’t any misunderstandings. The fact that everyone also had their own skill and talent to contribute to the project helped make the design process feel seamless.
What we learned
We learned the importance of trusting the process, and understanding color schemes and theory was definitely part of that process. We learned that having a plain design at the beginning is important so that we make sure we have all of our general ideas laid down before we get into more detail. We also learned that the smallest details can make a difference on how our project can look like whether it’s transitions or small buttons. We also gained a greater understanding on how to work Figma, especially when it comes to utilizing the ‘prototype’ aspect of it.
What's next for Fishtank
Fishtank will be constantly improved overtime as technology changes to become more efficient. We plan to integrate and improve the AI aspect of the app by adding a map page where we will be using a system, such as Google Maps, to help the user navigate to where their event is in case they aren’t familiar with the location. In the future, Fishtank will still be an app that brings awareness to on-campus activities relating to health, lifestyle, and school and encourages students to be involved in their university. as a way to destress, be active, and improve the world one small step at a time.
