Inspiration
The inspiration behind flagem was a deep concern for the safety and well-being of college communities. As college students ourselves, we noticed that there were many times when we had uncomfortable interactions with others on campus. We wanted to create a solution that would empower college students to make informed decisions about who they interact with and foster a safer, more supportive community environment.
What it does
flagem is more than just a safety app; it's a community-building tool. At its core, flagem allows users to flag names from their college community as either green flags (positive) or red flags (negative). The app then uses these flags to generate a color gradient representation for each name. This reveals to college students a list of people who are safe to interact with. We also have tags in order to help people find friends with common interests.
How we built it
We used tools like Microsoft PowerPoint, ChatGPT and DALLE to design a visually appealing and informative presentation. Each slide was carefully crafted to explain the purpose, functionality, and potential impact of "Flagem." We leveraged graphics, text, and visuals to make our concept come to life.
Challenges we ran into
As college freshmen with no prior project development experience, we faced several challenges along the way. The most significant challenge was the realization that building a fully functional app was beyond our current capabilities. We also had to grapple with the complexity of handling user data and ensuring privacy and safety on the platform. Additionally, time constraints and our academic commitments presented challenges in dedicating enough time to the project.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Despite the challenges, we are proud of our ability to conceptualize "Flagem" and translate our idea into a well-structured presentation. We created a clear vision of how the app would work and the value it could bring to college communities.
What we learned
Through the "Flagem" project, we discovered that turning our ideas into reality is more attainable than we initially believed. While we faced challenges and limitations, we realized that with determination and the right resources, we can bring innovative concepts to life. This experience has taught us the importance of perseverance, resourcefulness, and seeking support from experts and mentors. We now have a greater confidence in our ability to transform creative ideas into impactful solutions.
What's next for flagem
Our vision for "Flagem" is to create a safer and more connected college community. As college freshmen, we're committed to learning the necessary skills, including databases and APIs, to build the application ourselves. Our focus is on adding new features, such as user profiles, enhanced privacy controls, real-time feedback, community forums, and safety alerts. By taking a hands-on approach, we aim to turn our vision into a reality and empower college students with the tools they need to make informed decisions about their interactions and connections.
