Inspiration

Transat A.T.

We wanted to try an api that seemed challenging for us to work. After talking with the Sponsors at the Transat A.T. kiosk, we all believed as a team that we could provide a solution that can use their API very well. We wanted to make a program that would suggest flights based on social network activity.

What it does

This program lets the user connect log into his Instagram account. It will then look at his activity. The program will then suggest flights.

How we built it

Flight Genie runs on a php server with Laravel framework to handle the REST api calls. The front end is built using the milligram framework (similar to Bootstrap) and uses jQuery.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

It works. We were able to extract the data from multiple account and show flights based on the user's interest and interactions. It was really exciting to see everything working together in symbiosis.

What we learned

The milligram framework can be difficult to work with if you do not include the style.css file that they don't provide and never tell you to use. I am talking about this code

What's next for Flight Genie

We are going to build a traveling empire! Benjamin also talked about voice recognition but I must admit that I did not understand how he was thinking about implementing voice recognition to the app. As of right now it is very late (3:52 AM) and Ben is sleeping. I guess it will remain a mystery. Ben asleep

I mostly worked on the front end. With Tobi, I did the landing page and the result page. We ended up using milligram, a css framework that I found on product hunt. It was not the best decision. Bootstrap would have been a better alternative, but at the time we realized this, it was too late to start again. I setup the server and domains (One of which never registered properly for some reasons). I also setup a LAMP server for the project but Ben and Nathan ended up using Vagrant instead of my server. I also helped Nathan a bit with the php to convert city into airport codes. It was a great learning experience!

I learned PHP from scratch with the help of Ben. I made a couple of functions that implement the Google Geocoding API to fetch a country name given the latitude and longitude.

Nathan Chao
I set up Laravel and mentored my teammates on PHP Coding. I set up the Controllers required to get the Credentials from Instagram, along with the flight information from the QPX engine. Finally, I filtered the JSON object data into the Web Page Views

Benjamin Lofo Follo
Started coding at the age of 12. Passionate of PC Building, Networks and Unix. Works a lot on Android and Web Apps.
I mainly focused on the front end with Justin. I made sure the main page looked nice and sharp using HTML & CSS and set up the different hyperlinks. As for the challenge we encountered, I think Justin sums it up pretty nicely in his contribution. It was a lot of fun, and I learned a lot from my mistakes!
