Inspiration

We are a team of design-focused engineers who are troubled by the usability of many websites. What if engineers, product managers, marketers can test their website, without recruiting many users, or perform live A/B testing that has real world costs?

What it does

FocusGroupies simulates an agent to walk through the website and provide critical, actionable feedback along the way.

Go to any website, and FocusGroupies will:

  1. Create a persona that best resembles your target audience
  2. Simulate how this person would walkthrough the website
  3. Thinking out loud as he/she does it
  4. Provide critical feedback as he/she goes

How we built it

There are three major components in FocusGroupies:

  1. Persona generator: based on information of the website, generate a persona that will act as the AI agent that walks through the website.
  2. Semantic HTML conversion: convert any raw HTML into a semantic version that an AI agent would understand.
  3. Turn-by-turn agent: an AI agent that will read the webpage (in its semantic form), decides the next step based on its persona and possible actions on the website, and keep doing until it reaches a goal.

Challenges we ran into

  1. Creating the raw-to-semantic HTML conversion
  2. Storing, using and renewing the context of the agent at every step during the walkthrough

What's next for FocusGroupies

FocusGroupies can be the de-facto design and research replacement, simulating thousands of agents at the same time. It can run big scale UX experiments at no time and at no cost, even changing the design for you.
