Inspiration
Our inspiration for FruitPicker VR came from the idea of blending game development with agriculture education. We wanted to create an engaging VR experience that lets players immerse themselves in the joy of harvesting fruits, learning about different types of fruits while scoring points in a beautiful orchard setting.
What it does
FruitPicker VR transports players to a colorful virtual orchard where they race against the clock to pick as many fruits as possible. The game features a timer, score counter, and fruit tracker to keep players engaged. Players can learn about the fruits they collect, making it both an educational and entertaining experience.
How We Built It
We built FruitPicker VR using Unity, designing an orchard with 3D fruit models and interactive trees. We used VR interaction tools to enable smooth grabbing and releasing motions and added a simple UI overlay to show real-time score, time, and collection progress. Background sounds and scoring audio cues were added to enhance the immersion.
Challenges We Ran Into
One major challenge was creating an intuitive, natural-feeling interaction system for picking and holding fruits. Ensuring smooth performance in a high-quality 3D environment while minimizing lag also proved difficult. Additionally, we worked to make the timer and scoring mechanics fair and engaging without distracting from the overall experience.
Accomplishments That We're Proud Of
We’re proud of achieving a smooth, responsive interaction system that makes picking fruits feel realistic. We also managed to create an aesthetic, relaxing orchard environment that looks great and maintains performance in VR. It’s rewarding to see the game both fun to play and educational.
What We Learned
We learned a lot about optimizing 3D environments for VR and designing intuitive interactions. We gained experience balancing visual quality with performance, and we strengthened our skills in UI design and VR integration. We also discovered techniques for maintaining immersion in a time-sensitive game.
What's Next for FruitPicker VR
In the future, we plan to add more fruit varieties, educational pop-ups with nutritional information, and bonus challenges for advanced gameplay. We’d also like to expand to multiplayer modes so players can harvest together, adding a social and collaborative element to the experience.
