The inspiration behind our innovative personal desk assistant was ignited by the fond memories of Furbys, those enchanting electronic companions that captivated children's hearts in the 2000s. These delightful toys, resembling a charming blend of an owl and a hamster, held an irresistible appeal, becoming the coveted must-haves for countless celebrations, such as Christmas or birthdays. The moment we learned that the theme centered around nostalgia, our minds instinctively gravitated toward the cherished toys of our youth, and Furbys became the perfect representation of that cherished era.
Why Furbys? Beyond their undeniable cuteness, these interactive marvels served as more than just toys; they were companions, each one embodying the essence of a cherished childhood friend. Thinking back to those special childhood moments, the idea for our personal desk assistant was sparked. Imagine it as a trip down memory lane to the days of playful joy and the magic of having an imaginary friend. It reflects the real bonds many of us formed during our younger years. Our goal is to bring the spirit of those adored Furbies into a modern, interactive personal assistant—a treasured piece from the past redesigned for today, capturing the memories that shaped our childhoods.
What it does
Our project is more than just a nostalgic memory; it's a practical and interactive personal assistant designed to enhance daily life. Using facial recognition, the assistant detects the user's emotions and plays mood-appropriate songs, drawing from a range of childhood favorites, such as tunes from the renowned Kidz Bop musical group. With speech-to-text and text-to-speech capabilities, communication is seamless. The Furby-like body of the assistant dynamically moves to follow the user's face, creating an engaging and responsive interaction. Adding a touch of realism, the assistant engages in conversation and tells jokes to bring moments of joy. The integration of a dashboard website with the Furby enhances accessibility and control. Utilizing a chatbot that can efficiently handle tasks, ensuring a streamlined and personalized experience. Moreover, incorporating home security features adds an extra layer of practicality, making our personal desk assistant a comprehensive and essential addition to modern living.
How we built it
Following extensive planning to outline the implementation of Furby's functions, our team seamlessly transitioned into the execution phase. The incorporation of Cohere's AI platform facilitated the development of a chatbot for our dashboard, enhancing user interaction. To infuse a playful element, ChatGBT was employed for animated jokes and interactive conversations, creating a lighthearted and toy-like atmosphere. Enabling the program to play music based on user emotions necessitated the integration of the Spotify API. Google's speech-to-text was chosen for its cost-effectiveness and exceptional accuracy, ensuring precise results when capturing user input. Given the project's hardware nature, various physical components such as microcontrollers, servos, cameras, speakers, and an Arduino were strategically employed. These elements served to make the Furby more lifelike and interactive, contributing to an enhanced and smoother user experience. The meticulous planning and thoughtful execution resulted in a program that seamlessly integrates diverse functionalities for an engaging and cohesive outcome.
Challenges we ran into
During the development of our project, we encountered several challenges that required demanding problem-solving skills. A significant hurdle was establishing a seamless connection between the hardware and software components, ensuring the smooth integration of various functionalities for the intended outcome. This demanded a careful balance to guarantee that each feature worked harmoniously with others. Additionally, the creation of a website to display the Furby dashboard brought its own set of challenges, as we strived to ensure it not only functioned flawlessly but also adhered to the desired aesthetic. Overcoming these obstacles required a combination of technical expertise, attention to detail, and a commitment to delivering a cohesive and visually appealing user experience.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
While embarking on numerous software projects, both in an academic setting and during our personal endeavors, we've consistently taken pride in various aspects of our work. However, the development of our personal assistant stands out as a transformative experience, pushing us to explore new techniques and skills. Venturing into unfamiliar territory, we successfully integrated Spotify to play songs based on facial expressions and working with various hardware components. The initial challenges posed by these tasks required substantial time for debugging and strategic thinking. Yet, after investing dedicated hours in problem-solving, we successfully incorporated these functionalities for Furby. The journey from initial unfamiliarity to practical application not only left us with a profound sense of accomplishment but also significantly elevated the quality of our final product.

What's next for FurMe
The future goals for FurMe include seamless integration with Google Calendar for efficient schedule management, a comprehensive daily overview feature, and productivity tools such as phone detection and a Pomodoro timer to assist users in maximizing their focus and workflow.
