Furnishare♻️🪑 🛋️
Inspiration✨✨
Furnishare was inspired by our observation of noticing trashed furniture on the streets of our cities. According to Environmental Protection Agency, the amount of furniture ending up in landfills in North America rose to 9.69 million tons in 2015.
What it does🌳
The mobile application allows users to upload pictures of nearby usable furniture, clothes, or electronics that have been put out for recycling. Users can give a short description along with condition rating to help aid other users who are looking for items to reuse. People looking for furniture, clothing, or electronics can go on the app and find the nearest locations where these items were found by other users. We believe this will help cut down waste while also helping the community.
How we built it🖥️
We built the application using React Native for the mobile app and used a Node/Express/MongoDB stack for the backend. We used Figma for the design mock up.
Challenges we ran into
It was the first time we worked with maps and geolocation, so that was a challenging yet rewarding experience. It was Ana's first time with react native as well, and so she had to overcome some hurdles as well.
What we learned✅
Working on Furnishare has helped us understand how mobile apps integrate with maps, and how geolocation works, how android/iOS security permissions are built and how it all goes together. Most importantly, we learnt how much waste we produce as a society and that a lot of it is completely avoidable by adopting sustainable practices!
What's next for Furnishare
During the development of Furnishare, we had more ideas that we just couldn't put down into code in the short duration of the hackathon, but we definitely aim to work on this after the hackathon and publish it into a usable platform. More specifically, we look forward to adding these new features:
- Timely confirmation by nearby users to check if the item still exists (using geolocation of all the users on the platform)
- A donation platform to help fund incentives for users who post reusable items on the regular
