Inspiration:
During the pandemic, the group that was impacted heavily was seniors. Isolated and living alone, we can only imagine the immense sense of loneliness that comes with not being able to see friends and family. Gather&Grow allows older people to reconnect socially in an accessible and safe environment — which extends on the mission of Telus’s Mobility for Good for Senior campaign: connecting seniors with their community.
What it does:
Older individuals may find it difficult to go outside their comfort zone, however, G&G acts as a safe environment for seniors to explore both online and in-person socializing opportunities.
How we built it:
For the back-end development, we used python and for the front-end, we used JavaScript and HTML CSS. The platform we used to create the website is photo.io and we then integrated everything together.
Challenges we ran into:
Some of the challenges we faced were when debugging the code. Some lines of code were repetitive; occasionally we would miss lines of code where there were errors and it became difficult to go back later and find those mistakes. Another challenge we faced was that we had trouble finding a good working platform to use; we switched between three different platforms until staying and continued our project on proto.io.
Accomplishments that we're proud of:
Some accomplishments that we were proud of is that we were able to learn from each other. Some of us had more coding experience than others and we were able to learn new techniques, like collaboratively coding on GitHub, that we found truly beneficial for our future coding endeavours.
What we learned:
While working on the project, we learnt that coding is not very straightforward and it is important to collaborate with everyone to problem-solve. Sometimes we would run into trouble so we learned to communicate with each other because two, three, or four brains are better than just one.
What's next for Gather&Grow:
We plan on continuing to add more features to our app to offer optimal accessibility features for our older users. Currently, we tried to facilitate app usage for seniors by adjusting font size, colour scheme, and speech navigation, but there are other functions like screen readers or customizable magnification that we can code for in the future. Moreover, we plan on providing more features to curate
