Inspiration
The recent energy price crunch highlights the need for added flexibility on the grid. Consumers taking a more active role in switching between electricity and gas may alleviate future supply chain issues.
What it does
If heating your home suddenly becomes cheaper using electricity than gas, our app will send you a notification, encouraging you to switch!
How we built it
Daily electricity and gas prices are scraped using the octopus API. Our backend uses the prices to calculate whether heating your home is cheaper with electricity or gas, depending on the efficiency of your boiler. Whenever the cheapest option changes, the app will send you a notification. We also built an ML model to forecast the gas and electricity prices, which are then used to estimate how much money you will save by switching.
Challenges we ran into
We tried developing an android app to send a notification, however, this turned out to be more difficult than first anticipated since none of us had much front-end experience.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We launched a working website which tells you whether gas or electricity is cheaper!
What we learned
Not to underestimate front-end development
What's next for Green Switch
Making the website more visually appealing, e.g. by adding a graph of electricity and gas prices.
