Inspiration
We noticed that lawyers were drowning in paperwork. They were spending hours or even days just searching through documents to find simple facts. We realized that existing tools were too slow or had limits on how much you could upload. We wanted to build something that turns those painful hours of reading into just seconds of work so lawyers can focus on winning cases instead of digging through files.
What it does
Grella is a secure legal workspace that lets you talk to your files. You can upload unlimited documents and even thousands of pages at once to ask questions about them. It scans everything instantly and gives you an answer with a citation pointing to the exact page where the info was found. It turns a massive pile of unorganized files into a searchable database in seconds.
How I built it
We used the latest technology to make Grella fast and smart. We used Frontier models and RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) to power the AI reasoning. To handle the documents, we built advanced algorithmic document parsing that can read messy files clearly. Finally, we built an architecture for scale that handles limitless files and secured it all with HSM (Hardware Security Modules) and TEE (Trusted Execution Environments) to keep data locked down.
Challenges I ran into
The biggest challenge was making sure the system could handle limitless files without slowing down. Processing thousands of legal documents at once requires a very strong architecture. Another challenge was integrating the high-level security like HSM and TEE. These are complex tools used by banks, and getting them to work seamlessly with an AI model took a lot of effort and testing.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
I am proud that we solved the speed limit of legal review. We can now take a task that used to take a human 10 hours and finish it in seconds. I am also proud of our security setup. We managed to build a Zero-Training system where user data is completely isolated which proves you can have powerful AI without sacrificing privacy.
What I learned
I learned that for lawyers accuracy is just as important as speed. It is not enough to just give an answer because you have to prove it. That is why we focused so hard on the Verified Citations feature. I also learned that security is not just a feature. It is the foundation. If a firm cannot trust you with their data then nothing else matters.
What's next for Grella
Now that we have successfully implemented Role-Based Access Control and Audit Logs we are focused on making the tool perfect for legal teams. Our next step is to build better collaboration features that law firms specifically need. We want to make it easy for lawyers to work together on cases by sharing research and reviewing documents as a group without ever leaving the secure workspace.
