Inspiration
TikToks of teachers saying that their students are unable to read or are reading at a level much lower than they should be.
What it does
Presents users with an image of an animal and asks them to spell its name. If they need it, users can also have the app play the name of the animal to help them sound out the name.
How we built it
Back-end - very minimal but made use of Python and Flask Front-end - HTML/CSS/JavaScript plus Node.js and React frameworks
Challenges we ran into
Most of our team was brand new to web development so there was a lot of learning that had to happen to get anything done. Additionally none of us have done a hackathon before so navigating the process and time crunch was a challenge in itself. Also, the hosting website has been having trouble with our most recent commits so that's a pretty big one too.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Just getting this project submitted is something we're proud of.
What we learned
Next hackathon we should know what technologies we want/can use and base our projects off that instead of learning all new technologies during the process.
What's next for HackaPhonics
There are many directions this project can go in, ideally a more focused approach on teaching kids to sound out words including pronunciations of individual letters and more words beyond just animals. We were looking to integrate AI TTS to help accomplish this but it proved to be out of the scope of what we could get done during the time frame.
