Inspiration

In Kenya, corruption remains to be a significant obstacle to development and good governance. Despite efforts to combat this issue, tracking government expenditure, identifying corrupt individuals, and encouraging whistleblowing are still challenging. The lack of transparency, fear of retaliation, and limited access to reliable data often prevent citizens and authorities from holding corrupt officials accountable.

What it does

We are able to enable citizen to callout police officers and county city officers when engaging in corruption or/and harassing citizens. It provides a platform for safe whistleblowing. We are able to provide a platform for actionable progress such as filling petition to your government representatives, organizing maandamanos and recalling your government official

How we built it

Framework -React Native -Tailwind CSS Backend -Python Django -Fast API -ML and AI

Challenges we ran into

We had difficulty in finding data on government spending and expenditure in Nairobi county. Incorporating an API to locate names and photos of people into the system. Some of us weren't familiar with some frameworks thus we had to adapt on how to do the project in a time effective way. We had quite some challenge in deploying the API(crashed multiple times but here we are.)

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Our users can report incidents without fear of retaliation, ensuring their safety. We encourage users to participate in discussions and solutions, creating a collective movement against corruption.

What we learned

Data about the operation of police and Nairobi city county officers The necessity of incorporating the security and privacy of the data of the users during design The importance of organic whistleblowing due to civic duty

Impact

Our product is designed to accommodate a growing user base, our platform can easily expand to include additional features and support in various regions, adapting to local needs.

We create a powerful community of active participants by engaging users to report corrupt authorities. Each report contributes to a larger dataset that can drive awareness and policy changes.

The platform is user-friendly and accessible, ensuring that anyone can report corruption easily. Our robust backend allows for efficient data processing and analysis, providing actionable insights to stakeholders and policymakers.

What's next for HakiAI

HakiAI is a mobile application that would reduce corruption in Kenya and enable people raise issues anonymously without fear of discrimination and attack by others. We hope to integrate our app with existing APIs. Also we will integrate social media platforms to enable us detect injustices happening and tracking corruption cases. We hope to be able to expand our database to hoId more pubIic data by incorporating EACC,Transparency International,Local news outlets and World data.
