Inspiration
People who suffer from disabilities, diseases or other social, mental & physical issues often face stigma and are segregated from the rest of the community. Doing the things we do every day is very hard for them, and support is hard to find.
Our group has dealt with various mental, physical, and social issues throughout our lives and after parsing through all of our personal experiences, we came to the agreement that being able to talk to someone facing similar issues would have really helped in those times of need.
What it does
Healic is a general health support web app that allows users facing similar social, physical, and mental issues to support each other over a friendly, pairing, peer-to-peer chatting network. Healic also provides a gallery to learn, research and optionally donate to various charities that help with physical, mental and social issues.
How we built it
Frontend: Built with React.js & materializecss
Server: Built with Node.js, express.js & socket.io
Challenges we ran into
- Styling with css3 was much more tedious than we thought, so we had to spend more time than expected on that.
- Figuring out a consistent layout for the website such that it's beautiful but also not too overwhelming.
- Setting up a deployment was a longer process than we thought.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- A fully working website.
- A fully working server.
- A working chat feature.
What we learned
- How to use React.js
- How to use css3
- How to deploy websites
What's next for Healic
We'd like for this project to be continued, and we plan to add more features to the site such as an account system and maybe reworking some of the styles to better fit our theme.
