Inspiration
I am a Texas resident who went through Winter Storm Uri. While I was fortunate to have power, electricity, and water for the duration of the storm, there were many people without power, electricity, and water, and with COVID-19 as well, made it harder for one to simply go to a friend's house who had electricity.
What it does
Shows a list of tasks that you can do to help the Texas community and you can earn points for completing tasks and use them to redeem prizes.
How we built it
Built using React and CSS
Challenges we ran into
There was an issue of double-clicking I ran into that allowed the users to earn points for tasks they've already completed. After several trials and errors, I successfully figured out it was best to simply remove the task from the list once it was completed.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Created a successful simulation of a rewards system that would allow the user to redeem their points.
What we learned
There is more than one way to approach a problem, each with its own pros and cons. In the case of the double-clicking issue, I was trying to figure out a perfect way to make sure that double-clicking wasn't possible even though the solution was right before my eyes the whole time.
What's next for Help After Uri
Adding a validation system to make sure that people actually completed the task they said they've completed. Including a backend system that would allow for the saving of user's data between attempts of visiting the site, the ability for users to identify that they were the ones who completed the task, and reaching out to sponsors to see if they are willing to purchase and ship the rewards to users.
