Inspiration

The inspiration came from this. It shocking to see how lacking information can cost families a lot both financially and health wise. Not only does the price difference being so big affect the financials of the family, if the family has bad health insurance, hospitals tend to opt for c-section instead of vaginal deliveries because they get paid more for them. The health care system is not broken it's working just as planned, it's Capitalism baby. My hope is that this will make a difference, especially in poor and minority communities, where disparities in healthcare access and information are already significant. These groups are disproportionately affected by higher C-section rates, which can lead to worse health outcomes for both mothers and infants. By equipping families with the right knowledge, I hope to empower them to advocate for themselves in a system that often prioritizes profit over their well-being. The goal is to bridge the gap, making healthcare choices more informed and equitable for everyone, regardless of their socioeconomic status.

What it does

It presents users with useful information regarding childbirth about nearby hospitals so they can make informed decisions about the process leading to better long term health and financial outcomes.

How we built it

It was built using typescript, open ai, and some mapping libraries.

Challenges we ran into

At first I was gonna use these dataset but the data processing proved to cumbersome because the datasets are not normalized. And even when I ended up with a sizeable amount of normalized data, there'd be inconsistencies with things like names and address with openai and the final dataset so I ended up having scrape that idea and go full ai.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Seeing a problem and shipping something to address it. Not giving up even when it takes 40 mins each time to process the data.

What we learned

Learned a lot about AI. AI is really really cool, it is a game changer for sure. I will use it more in my projects. Data is also big too, in the future I'll be more robust with data quality checks and make the sure the data is right one for the project, sometimes there are easier ways to find your answers.

What's next for Her Water Broke

His water broke, lmao.

Actually crowd source the data, I would make this a hospital review app for births and let people review hospitals, by crowd sourcing the data we can be more accurate and would actually force hospitals to improve their obstetric processes and ensure better outcomes.

Research shows that minority hospitals have the lowest disparity in treatment so I would include lists this this into the site, and an option to put minority hospitals at the top.
