Inspiration
Whether it be for a new job, college, or family, most womxn will eventually have to travel beyond her current horizons, sometimes alone. This uncertainty can be scary, but luckily she will find comfort in her new home as a result of the financial, safety, and social resources she now has directly from HerHome!
What it does
HerHome is a resource for womxn on the move to have a better understanding of an area. All you need is an area code to get information on crime rates, property values and health and wellness center locations. HerHome is dedicated to spreading positivity and building stronger communities by compiling resources for education about safety and communication with other women.
How we built it
Using data visualization and mapping tools in Python, data compiled in the Firebase cloud database is analyzed and depicted in a comprehensive format. We used HTML/CSS/JS to develop our webpage. As we were still beginners to web development and the Firebase database, the process of creating the website and database was initially difficult, but we were able to combat this steep learning curve by constantly researching and learning throughout the past day.

Challenges we ran into
Considering the 24 hour time limit, our team had to sacrifice certain functions that would have been ideal for this project. In addition, we were beginners to web development and the Firebase database. Learning these skills were time consuming but worth the time for the final product. If we were able to expand on this project further, we would spend more time integrating the backend and front end along with building a broad database.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of building our programming skills in both front and back end design by applying our knowledge to create a product with the potential of improving life for womxn in the US. This project required our whole group of amazing, talented women to put our skills together to build an aesthetically pleasing and informative product that can build stronger communities.
What we learned
Through this project we learned not only skills related to back end and front end development, but also about the importance of safety and community when moving to a new place. This product can be used by everyone however, with womxn in mind, it is important to know how safe an area is and where to go for emergencies. Social life is also an important aspect for an enjoyable community. With a chat feature and social app recommendations, we want womxn to be in an enjoyable, prosperous, and safe community,
What's next for HerHome
After integrating the front and back end of HerHome, querying features will be implemented to expand the database over the entire country. Features including individual location submissions or recommendations, and a functioning chat room will make this app more informative and enjoyable for users in all areas. More resources about self defense and mental health will be provided and further details about the housing market will be depicted with a more robust database.
