Inspiration

All of us have been in that situation where we started our period but didn’t have a pad or a tampon on us. We know it might be awkward or uncomfortable to directly approach a stranger and ask for products. The accessibility of menstrual products should not impede daily life, and offering spare products when you can is an easy way to help out and support others.

What it does

Periodt ensures that womxn and those who menstruate don't have to compromise having adequate products because approaching a stranger is uncomfortable. Users of Periodt will be able to see the other users and will be able to use the in-app/website message feature to get in touch with them. The users will be able to connect with friends and others through the app and will either be requesting products, offering products, or be listing public restrooms they have seen that offer free products. For convenience, there is also a map that has the users' locations so that users will know who is in their vicinity. Also included is a FAQ page to clarify any questions users may have and a Resources page that lead users to learn more about topics concerning menstrual products.

How we built it

We build the website using HTML, css, and JavaScript. The map is from the Mapbox API. The IOS prototype was made using Figma.

Challenges we ran into

This was our first time using Figma, so it was difficult to figure out some of the functionalities such as linking frames together. It was a big learning curve, but it was interesting to learn how to use Figma. We also didn't have that much experience with JavaScript, so the parts that include js were a challenge.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of the idea; it would definitely be a resource to all of us if something similar existed. We are also happy with our progress and how both the IOS protoype and website turned out despite having a busy week.

What we learned

We learned about Figma and more about JavaScript, HTML and css. We also became more comfortable with GitHub since this was done virtually.

What's next for Periodt

Since we weren't too familiar with JavaScript, the functionality of the map and message feature isn't complete, so we would like to work on that in the future. Another idea we had was to have local alerts within a certain radius to meet other Periodt users. We'd also like to add onto the map locations of nearby women's health centers.
