Inspiration
As a new student at HM for 2016, I was beset with troubles and small questions that couldn't be found in the student guide. Therefore, I wanted to be able to help students like myself so they aren't as intimidated during their time here.
What it does
As of now I have only finished the exam section and parts of the stat holder section, which include surveys on your study situation and a deep breathing activity. I plan to include things such as a direction function to help those who are lost and a way to determine how relevant Haiku is to a class.
How I built it
I utilized android studio and the UI editor to create an interface to navigate various survey and advice pages. All of the relevant code is in one class which changes its focus to various xml files.
Challenges I ran into
As I am new to Android studio, I originally ran into a lot of problems with the layout, especially with making sure that objects in constraint layout were properly placed. I also spent a bit of time struggling with how the app could not open, which turns out was an issue when I tried to change pages by changing classes instead of just changing the focus page in the main class.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
While I have not finished my app, I am proud to have gone in depth into one section and to have been able to get a handle on how to use Android Studio for phone apps.
What I learned
I learned the basics of using Android Studio for app development, along with functions such as a countdown timer and using calendar and clock objects.
What's next for HMGuide
I am planning on completing the rest of the sections- the direction one being a priority and making the statistics section more complex. It would be great to also create a login function to store stats more efficiently and open the door for connecting to the internet and connecting with others who use the app for advice on being a student at Horace Mann.
