MLH Hackathon: Holiday Hacks, Fall 2020
Inspiration
For this hackathon, we decided to create a fun little game in which the player can collect presents and score points. We were inspired by the holiday theme of Christmas, as well as old 16-bit RPG and Flash games from the early 2000's, to aim for a more game-like hack, this time around.
What It Does
This hackathon allows the player character to be moved from left to right. Additionally, the code should function such that the gift boxes and reindeer will fall from the top for the player to collect. Certain gifts will give more points when collected, while catching a reindeer will cause Santa to lose one of three lives before it's all game over!
How We Built It
This hack was built using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Additionally, all art assets were designed by us in piskelApp.
Challenges We Ran Into
Some challenges we ran into involved some missed communication due to differing time zones, as well as struggling to make a game-like application due to lack of previous knowledge. We overcame some of these through focusing on the skillsets we were good at.
Accomplishments that We're Proud Of
We're proud of the art assets we made for this game, as well as the new tricks we've picked up, throughout.
What We Learned
We learned to manipulate JavaScript to imitate more of the Python, Turtle, and Pygame functionalities to create somewhat of a top-down game scheme.
What's Next for Secret Santa Simulation
Currently, we've reached an impasse with our JavaScript in getting gravity to function as it should and allow the sprite boxes to effectively "fall". Once we've gotten those to work, all other things should fall in line.
