Inspiration
We were inspired to build something which replicates and automates the work of voice assistants at home. We wanted to bridge the gap between a person's work and personal life by making it easy for them to keep a check on their home though far away. We were even inspired to tackle the hardware challenging in implementing the things with internet and daily life. The prizes were an add-on to choose this direction.
What it does
This project involves Internet of Things, Data Visualization and using of Wegmans API. A couple of sensors that monitor things like the quantity of groceries at home and few other things like the working of lights at home are interfaced to Arduino. When any of these are to be replaced, the item is added to the cart in the user's Wegmans account by checking its availability and price on the nearby Wegman's store. Statistical visualization of the monthly and yearly purchases are displayed in the front-end.
How we built it
The Wegmans API is used to connect the system with Wegmans purchasing. The UI is built on JavaScript, HTML, CSS. We built the IOT segment with Arduino 101, light sensor, temperature sensor, air quality and load sensors. The visualization are done with Google Charts.
Challenges we ran into
We faced it greatly challenging to meet the lack hardware requirements which resulted in a shift between 3 ideas. The ideas initially were based on RaspberryPi provided by MLH which had boot issues. After the 4 hours of working on it with volunteers and mentors, we chose to change our idea and ran into Arduino 101 and completed our system.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are so proud that our system came out so well because of our continuous playing on the challenged board and sensors. It was a great experience to control the sensors and to gain a satisfaction of accomplishment. The live working of the system is an extra feather added to the hat.
What we learned
We learnt that perseverance is the key to success. Our working on this project gave us a clear insight on dealing with any kind of hardware and the APIs. It was fun to learn and play with different stuff and to produce a working model.
